Route animation

Animate a travel route

To animate a travel route is to turn a journey into a short video in which the route draws itself across a map. Travel Animator animates a travel route on iOS and Android: add the stops, pick a 3D vehicle, and export the result in HD or 4K.

What does it mean to animate a travel route?

An animated travel route is a map with time added to it. Instead of a static line joining your stops, the line is drawn stop by stop while a marker or a 3D vehicle travels along it, so a viewer sees the order and the direction of the journey rather than just its shape.

That is the difference between a screenshot of a map and a route animation: the screenshot shows where you went, the animation shows the going. It is why the format suits trip recaps, road-trip videos and flight paths, where the sequence of places is the story.

How to animate a travel route

  1. 1

    Add the stops

Search for each place, drop pins on the map, or paste a Google Maps link and let the route plot itself. A recorded GPX track from a cycling or running app can be imported instead.

  2. 2

Choose the vehicle and the map

Pick from 300+ 3D models — a car for a road trip, a plane for a flight, a train for a rail journey — then choose one of 30+ flat, satellite and 3D globe map styles.

  3. 3

    Adjust the path

Drag the line between two stops to curve it, remove a point with a double tap, and set the speed so the animation lands on the length you need.

  4. 4

    Export and share

Preview the animation, then export in HD or 4K at the aspect ratio of wherever it is going — vertical for Reels, TikTok and Shorts, wide for YouTube and slides.

Animating a travel route: FAQ

How do I animate a travel route?

Add your stops in Travel Animator (or paste a Google Maps link), choose a 3D vehicle and a map style, adjust the path between stops, then export the animation as an HD or 4K video. No editing software is involved.

Can I animate a travel route for free?

Yes. Plotting a route, animating it and previewing the result cost nothing, and HD export is included. Pro, at $5.99 a month or $24.99 a year, adds 4K export, every map style and watermark-free video.

Can I animate a route from Google Maps?

Yes. Copy the share link for a Google Maps route and paste it into Travel Animator, and the stops and the path between them are plotted for you rather than added by hand.

Can I animate a GPX track from Strava or Garmin?

Yes. Import the GPX file and the recorded track becomes the animated route, so a ride, run or hike is animated along the path actually travelled.

What can the route be animated with?

Over 300 3D models across land, air and sea — cars, campervans, motorbikes, planes, helicopters, trains, ships and more — or a plain marker if the vehicle is not the point.

Does animating a travel route need video editing skills?

No. There is no timeline and no keyframing. The route, the vehicle and the map style are the inputs, and the animation is generated from them.
